Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

During our assessment visit, we observed staff interacting with people, offering people choices regarding what they wanted to eat and drink. Staff worked at a relaxed pace providing words of encouragement to people. One example we observed was a member of staff asking a person how they were getting on with their breakfast and asking them if they were ready for their medicines to be administered. The person said yes, and the member of staff placed the medicines pot in the person’s hand and offered the person a drink to take with the medicines. The member of staff was encouraging and gentle going at the person’s own pace.

Staff spoke positively about their roles and how they promote people’s independence and choices. One member of staff told us, “Each person has their own routine. [Name of person] routine has to be exact as they will be unhappy if we do not follow it. Staff try to stick to this. We know residents individually and know how to make them happy.” Another member of staff told us, “We encourage anything they [people using the service] can do to the maximum.”

Care was planned in a person-centred way and people received care from consistent staff. People's choices and preferences were recorded in their care plans. These were regularly reviewed and updated as people's needs changed.

Overall people we spoke with were supported to have choice and control over their own care and to make decisions about their care, treatment and wellbeing. One person told us, “They [staff] encourage me to mobilise with my frame. I can have my food outside or in my room. I can go where I want to, and they [staff] help me.” Another person told us, “Staff encourage me to be as independent as I can, on good days I can help make my bed, if not the staff will do it for me.”
