Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

We observed staff respecting people’s independence, choice and control. When we asked to speak to people staff asked the person if this was okay and left them to have time with us alone. Staff were on hand should people need support but were supportive of their independence and freedom to speak openly with us about their experiences.

Records demonstrated people were supported to be independent, were offered choice and encouraged to take as much control of their lives as possible.

People told us they had choice and consented to their care and support. People had the opportunity to try new experiences, develop new skills and gain independence. Staff knew when people needed their space and privacy and respected this. Relatives raised no concerns about people being prevented to have as much choice and control over their lives as possible.

Staff understood the importance of encouraging independence and people taking control of their day to day lives. Staff said, “Personal care, (person) takes front line role and does most of what they are capable of. Breakfast, they make their own choices and makes their own tea and drinks. Same applies for lunch and dinner. We have to give them guidelines. (Person) is an individual who you can sit down and have a very good conversation with. Me and my colleagues often discuss (person) and we do a complete care plan overhaul. Positive reinforcement we have noticed really works. (Person) is getting enough support to allow them to make their own choices. I had the opportunity to take them to their relatives over Easter, their relative couldn't believe what they was able to do now.”
