Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The home had a culture that was open, positive, inclusive, empowering, and person-centred. People were supported to have choice and control over their own care and to make decisions about their care, treatment and wellbeing.

Care provided in the home was very personalised. Staff promoted person centred care to make sure everyone received a level of care to meet their needs and respected their wishes and independence.

People’s independence was encouraged and supported. One relative said, “They’re [staff] very good at supporting him to do what he can do; they give him as much independence as they can.” People’s care and support had been adapted to promote independence as their needs had changed. For example, one person had their environment adapted to ensure they could remain independent with their personal care. This ensured they continued to have choice and control over their life and promoted their wellbeing. People led full, active lives of their choosing and were part of their community. People went to local events, shopping, walking, to the theatre, for meals and lunches out and on holidays. One person was a very talented artist. They showed us lots of their artwork and their lovely art studio which they had in the garden. People were supported to maintain important relationships with family and friends. Relatives told us that they visited people and that people also spent time at home with them. People had been supported to attend family occasions and holidays. One relative said, “I see [name] every couple of weeks and have lots of contact through email and [mobile phone apps].”
