People were able to make choices for themselves. The registered manager had systems in place to ensure staff observed peoples choices. Independence was encouraged and people received visitors to the service and had support to engage in activities they enjoyed. People were supported to maintain their independence and understood their rights which were observed by staff.

Independence, choice and control

People were supported to maintain their independence. People and relatives told us independence was promoted by staff. One person told us, "I can help myself in the morning I need some help to get to the lounge and staff come and help me when I am ready." A relative told us, "The staff had a report from a previous care home when [person's name] was admitted, they have improved so much since admission staff don’t recognise [person's name] from this report." People had choice and control over their care. People and relatives told us staff enabled them to make choices for themselves. One person told us, "We have a lovely choice of meals I have had cereal for breakfast and some toast." People could receive visitors at the home, were supported to maintain relationships which were important to them and take part in activities which were of interest. One person told us, "My family come often, I think they will come today maybe a little bit later." Another person told us, "The staff organise things for us in the day they will be in soon to do an activity we do lots of different things."

Staff promoted peoples independence. We saw staff offer support to people in a way which maximised their independence when supporting people with their mobility needs. We saw people were supported to eat and drink themselves with encouragement from staff. People were supported to make choices. Staff were observed offering people choices of meals, drinks, activities and people made their own decisions with support from staff when needed. People were supported to undertake activities which were of interest to them. We saw 1 person have their nails filed and painted with staff who spent time ensuring the person was engaged in the activity, the person was really pleased with the outcome.
