People were cared and supported by staff who demonstrated kindness and compassion. People were respected as individuals. People were supported to maintain relationships and networks that were important to them. People had access to their friends and family at times that suited them.

Independence, choice and control

People recognised where their independence was restricted by their medical condition. One person told us they felt trapped as were still adjusting to living in a care home, another person told us they were highly dependent on staff to move positions. People also told us, “I’m very independent, so they better be letting me choose. I read if I can get large print and I’ve got a tapestry of the king’s coronation that I must start. I like knitting and we have a group called knit and natter here”, “Very much so. My daughter phones me and tells me what’s on. I’m quite vocal at the monthly meetings,” “Yes, within reason. I get involved in the council meetings, I have my say” and “You create your own independence within the basic framework which is provided by the care home. People told us they could have visitors when they wanted and there were no restrictions. Comments included, “That is one of the very good points, any time. I think maybe after 9pm they have to ring and check. I entertain mine in here, it’s an apartment”, “Yes, they can. My family come regularly.” and “Yes, we can either stay here in the café or go up to my room. No set times when they like.” Relatives were also happy with the visiting arrangements and access to activities. One relative commented “The activities team are great, very enthusiastic and lots of good ideas for interesting things to do”.

Staff told us they promoted people’s independence and choice in all aspects of their life, which enabled people to have better control over their care. Staff commented, “I feel the home really embrace person centred care, the round sheets support this as the resident gets to choose everything for themselves when they are admitted into the home. Our assessment process is very thorough, we like to learn as much as possible about the resident before they join us. This enables us to support the resident in being as independent as possible and making sure their choices and decisions are fulfilled.” Staff told us people were provided with a wide range of activities to choose from and that the activities team try to accommodate everyone’s interests.

People were supported to have choice and control over their own care. We observed people freely walking around the downstairs area, meeting up with friends and discussing what they were doing and what time they intended to go to the restaurant. We observed people were supported to be independent, staff encouraged this. We observed visitors were warmly welcomed by staff. People were supported to maintain relationships and networks that were important to them.

Care plans supported people to express their wishes and continue with activities of their choice. Where people had expressed a wish to use communal coffee making facilities this was respected.
