The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has upgraded the rating of Allerton Park Care Centre in Allerton, Bradford from inadequate to good, and removed it from special measures following its latest inspection in October and November last year.

Allerton Park Care Centre, run by Park Homes (UK) Limited, is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care for up to 50 people, some of whom are living with dementia and/or mental health needs. There were 35 people living at the home at the time of the inspection.

This inspection was carried out to follow up on concerns found at the previous visit, when the home was rated inadequate and placed in special measures.

Following this recent inspection, as well as the home’s overall rating improving from inadequate to good, so have the ratings for being safe and well-led. It has again been rated good for being caring and responsive. Effective was not included in this inspection and remains rated as good from a previous inspection.

Sheila Grant, CQC deputy director of operations in the north, said:

When we inspected Allerton Park Care Centre, it was encouraging to see that a significant amount of improvements had been made since our previous inspection. The home is now rated as good, and we have removed it from special measures, as people are receiving a much higher quality of care.

The service had built good relationships within the local community, including with a school which had recently visited the home and brought flowers for people living there. Also, visits were arranged for people to go to a local community centre and community café to give them the opportunity to get out and meet other people.

It was good to see that staff and leaders worked well with partner organisations when required and followed their advice and guidance. When we spoke to partners, we received positive feedback, and they described Allerton Park Care Centre as an engaging service.

Additionally, incidents and accidents were being recorded, and lessons were learnt and shared with staff to keep people safe. Also, staff told us they felt well trained and supported.

Staff and leaders at Allerton Park Care Centre should be proud of the improvements they have made to improve their standard of care. We’ll continue to monitor the service to make sure these changes are sustained long term.

Inspectors found:

  • The service had safe recruitment processes in place when recruiting staff, and there were enough staff to support people safely.
  • Care plans and associated risks were centred around the individual and their specific health, safety and welfare.
  • Safe systems were in place for the management and administration of medicines.
  • Staff were trained and aware of how to protect people from abuse and harm and they knew how to report any concerns.
  • People received care and support from staff who were kind and compassionate.
  • People and their families felt involved in their care.

The report will be published on CQC’s website in the next few days.
