CQC carries out assessment of specialist eating disorder service at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published a report following an assessment of Cilantro suite at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust in April.

Cilantro Suite is a ten-bed mixed sex ward for people over the age of 18 with a diagnosis of eating disorders as defined by the Mental Health Act. The suite also provides a day service where people can attend between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

The inspection was carried out as part of CQC’s continual checks on the safety and quality of healthcare services.

Following the assessment, the overall rating for the service is rated as good overall, as well as the ratings for safe, effective, caring, and well-led. Responsive is rated as requires improvement.

The overall rating for Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust remains as requires improvement.

Inspectors found:

  • People spoke highly about the ward’s psychologist and valued their interventions which contributed towards their recovery
  • The environment was safe, and regular risk assessments were completed
  • Staff demonstrated good knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and were able to describe the actions they would take to keep people safe
  • People spoke positively about most staff who they described as kind, friendly and helpful
  • Therapy groups were available each week that included mindfulness, relaxation, nutrition and meal support and psychoeducation
  • People’s relatives told us they were involved in their relatives care as much as they wanted to be
  • There were enough staff employed to meet the assessed safe staffing levels and staff had recently been recruited to fill vacancies
  • Not all staff were trained in eating disorders which could impact on people’s recovery.
