Tregarland care home in Whitchurch Road, Tavistock, Devon has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in April.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being caring and well-led and Good for being safe, effective and responsive to people’s needs. The overall rating is Outstanding.

Tregarland is a residential care home that provides accommodation and personal care for people living with learning disabilities, mental health conditions and physical disabilities.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector, Adult Social Care, said;

“Tregarland is a service where the staff and management have ensured that the ethos of providing high quality care with respect for the people, their relatives and the service itself is at the very heart of its operation. People were overwhelmingly positive about the care they receive and told inspectors they feel happy at the service and what they enjoy the most is the friendships and family set up.

“The service was rated Good overall after our previous inspection in February 2016 and I would like to congratulate the staff and management on their achievement in continuing to provide high quality care to a standard that meets our highest overall rating. They should be proud of the way and manner this service is run.”

Some of the key findings from the inspection include:

  • The atmosphere in the home was warm, welcoming and very positive; people were living in harmony with each other, expertly supported by the staff, who had succeeded in sharing the space and tasks, rather than there being an 'us and them' environment. Positive, friendly relationships were very evident.
  • The premises met people's diverse needs and equipment specific to individual needs helped people maintain their independence. Every opportunity to improve people's lives was taken which included choosing equipment most suitable for the person's needs rather than what had first been offered.
  • There was a sustained and positive culture at the agency that was open, inclusive and empowering with people encouraged and supported by staff to achieve individual personal goals beyond any disabilities. One person was able to achieve an ambition to fly a plane through having flying lessons.
  • Health care professionals spoke highly of the care provided and told inspectors that they felt there was "A really high standard of care and the service was “an outstanding service"
