The Care Quality Commission has rated the care being provided at Formations Care Home in Shipley, West Yorkshire to be Outstanding after an inspection in August and September this year.
Formations Care Home was rated Outstanding overall and for services that are effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well-led. Safe was rated as Good.
The service provides accommodation and personal care for up to 24 people, however the home had reduced its capacity to 19 to make room for communal space. At the time of the inspection it was at capacity. It is the service’s first inspection since becoming registered in July last year.

Debbie Westhead – Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care said:
“We found many examples of outstanding care across this home. The provider was very proactive in gathering new research and development from other organisations to help inform and train staff at the home. We also found that they used the knowledge to develop their own best practice and share it with a professional network they had become involved in, to push best practice forward. Their work was well regarded.
“It was clear to us that the provider valued people’s contribution to the service and how their views should shape the support they receive. People and their relatives were also actively involved in the home’s recruitment process helping inform the selection of staff based on people’s needs.
“We also saw how the service listened to staff feedback and created bespoke training solutions, an interesting exercise was carried out involving a simulated contaminated package that was tracked through the home to identify the areas and risks that infection poses. The service was also proactive in spreading awareness and learning about mental health conditions to prevent people in care being stereotyped by their condition.
“There was some excellent work being done by staff whom were skilled in recognising the risks that loneliness and social isolation can cause. They worked closely with people to enhance their independence, in one case improving a person’s fitness so they could function better in the local community and return to a more active lifestyle.
“We received nothing but positive feedback from everyone we spoke with, clearly a creative and well engaged service from the leadership through to the staff delivering the care. A fantastic achievement for their first inspection. Well done to everyone involved at Formations Care Home.”
