Congratulations are in order for Professor Nigel Sparrow, our Senior National GP Advisor and Responsible Officer, for making the New Year’s Honours List for 2015.
Prof Sparrow has been awarded an OBE by the Queen in recognition of his services towards primary medical care for the last three decades.
Prof Nigel Sparrow, 59, has been a GP for thirty years in the Nottinghamshire area until he retired from clinical practice in March. Also, he is the Medical Director for Revalidation at the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), and he was a GP appraiser and trainer.
In addition to holding these roles, Prof Sparrow’s career spans medical education and professional development. He chaired the RCGP’s Professional Development Board for six years (2007-2013), during which he led the development of the Continuing Professional Development strategy for GPs to support their revalidation. Before that, he was Vice Chair of RCGP’s Council between 2004 and 2007.
Elsewhere, Prof Sparrow has been Deputy GP Dean at the East Midlands Deanery, President of the Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society and he is a visiting Professor of General Practice at Lincoln University. He was presented with the Foundation Council Award at the RCGP in 2014.
Prof Sparrow is married with two children and lives in Nottingham.
As Senior National GP Advisor at CQC, Prof Sparrow provides professional advice to the organisation, particularly in relation to its regulation of general practices and out-of-hours primary medical services. As Responsible Officer at CQC, he is accountable to the General Medical Council for the revalidation and fitness to practice of all of the doctors who are working within the organisation.
Also, he blogs regularly for CQC, in which he clears up some of the common myths about our inspections of GP and out-of-hours services and shares agreed guidance.

It is wonderful to be recognised for the work that I have done to improve the quality of care in general practice at the Royal College of General Practitioners, the Standing Commission on Carers and now at the Care Quality Commission, as well as being a GP for the last thirty years.
"Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work with some of the most hard-working and dedicated people within general practice and across the wider healthcare system. I couldn’t have achieved what I have done without them."
