The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found the quality of care provided by Jack Dormand Care Home, Peterlee to be Outstanding following an inspection in December.

Jack Dormand Care Home can accommodate up to 43 people in one adapted building across two floors. Some of the people had nursing care needs and some people were living with a dementia type illness.

The service was rated Outstanding for caring, responsiveness and well-led, and Good for safe and effective. A copy of the latest report can be found on our website.

CQC last inspected the service in October 2015 and rated the service as Good. At this inspection we found the service had improved to 'Outstanding. Some of the features from the inspection included:

The registered manager had identified innovative ways of improving the social and communication skills of a person with social anxiety disorder. Staff had identified people with communication needs or who required additional social stimulation. They took the time to visit people in their rooms and engage in activities or conversations of the person's choice.

Inspectors noted that the service had a positive culture that was very person-centred and inclusive. Staff were sensitive to times when people needed caring and compassionate support. Staff were visibly proud to work at the home. Awards were presented to staff to recognise and celebrate the efforts they had made and the impact they had upon the lives of people, their families and other staff.

Debbie Westhead, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care in the North, said:

“This is a service that provides exceptional care; I was particularly impressed with how person-centred the service was. This means the person was at the centre of any care or support plans and their individual wishes, needs and choices were taken into account.

“This was an extremely caring service. It was clear staff members enjoyed working with people. Two staff members had been nominated as dignity champions ensuring that people were treated with dignity and supported to live as independently as possible.

“Staff were extremely complimentary about the registered manager, who supported the continuous improvement of staff. The registered manager had developed excellent links with the local Clinical Commissioning Group and the local NHS Foundation trust to develop and improve outcomes for people who used the service. Of the many plaudits the service had received, one had come from the local mayor who had worked as a volunteer and bus driver at the home. She praised Jack Dormand and the staff who “go above and beyond their duties, it's like a big family unit, a labour of love."

“This service is very well led, indeed there are numerous examples of the registered manager providing additional courses and learning for staff. Staff members referred to the registered manager as exceptional, adding they were “very good, very resident orientated.”

“It is clear the care being provided by the Jack Dormand Care Home is outstanding and I congratulate all concerned on improving the rating from Good. It is fully deserved.”
