NHS Chief Executive, David Nicholson, and Care Quality Commission Chairman, Barbara Young, today (Thursday) "named and famed" NHS trusts that have performed strongly in the NHS performance ratings.

They sent a public letter singling out the achievements of 44 trusts that have performed strongly for two years. These trusts were "excellent" for quality and at least "good" for financial management this year, as well as at least "good" in both categories the previous year.

CQC also sent a letter to 13 trusts that have made notable improvements in their ratings performance. These trusts had been "weak" on quality at some point over the past three years, but have now risen to being "good". They are also rated at least “good” for financial management this year.

Barbara Young said: "We want to acknowledge publicly the achievements of these trusts and thank them for all they have done on behalf of patients.

"We are sure that many people have benefitted from their efforts and we hope that they will continue to make improvements on behalf of the communities they serve."

She added: "The NHS is one of our most valuable public services and it is really important to celebrate the achievements of those in it who do a good job."

The NHS performance ratings are derived from a comprehensive assessment that draws on thousands of items of data, targeted inspection and intelligence from patients and the public. To do well, trusts must perform strongly across a broad range of standards and indicators.
