The Care Quality Commission has rated Montrose Barn in St Agnes, Cornwall as Outstanding following an inspection in September.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being responsive to people’s needs and well led and Good for being safe, effective and caring. The overall rating was Outstanding.

Montrose Barn is a care home that provides accommodation and personal care support for up to two adults with learning disabilities

Amanda Stride, Head of Inspection for Adult Social Care in the South West, said;

“It is always wonderful to see how a service supports people to live their lives to the fullest and in line with their backgrounds, beliefs or lifestyle choices.

“The culture of Montrose Barn was one of promoting independence and continuous improvement by seeking the user voice of the people living in the service, and this was demonstrated in all that the staff did and their interactions with people at the home. I would like to congratulate the service on attaining an overall rating of Outstanding.”

People were constantly encouraged and supported to engage in the local community. For example, supporting a neighbour in jam making and going out for walks. This had improved people’s wellbeing and reduced the need for more than one, staff member to support them at most times. Because staff had supported the person to gain independence and supported them to become more confident when out in the community. This had resulted in the person engaging in almost daily events in the community

Throughout the inspection there were examples of people being included and empowered to make decisions about their wishes and preferences. For example, one person liked to be spontaneous at times and staff understood this and there was provision for them to do things they wanted to do when they wanted to do it. There was no assumption of a routine to be followed. It demonstrated a very focused person-centred approach to supporting the person
