Home Instead Senior Care in Budleigh Salterton, Devon has been rated Outstanding for a second time following an inspection in October by the Care Quality Commission.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding both overall and for being safe, effective, caring, well-led and responsive to people’s needs.

Home Instead Senior Care is a service that provides personal care to people living in their own homes.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector, Adult Social Care, said;

“It is great to hear that this service has been rated Outstanding for the second time.

“People received exceptional care with services being developed and tailored to their needs.

“Staff spent time getting to know people to build meaningful and valued relationships with them. People were treated with compassion and kindness.

“It was clear throughout the inspection, that the staff took pride in their work and went the extra mile for the people they supported. I would like to congratulate the service on attaining an overall rating of Outstanding again.”

Debbie Westhead, Interim Chief Inspector, Adult Social Care, said;

“I am delighted to be able to congratulate Home Instead Senior Care for another overall Outstanding rating”.

“The quality of care which our inspectors found here was exceptional and I am very pleased that we can celebrate the service’s achievements.

“An outstanding service is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work and I know there is a great level of commitment to making a difference for the people they support. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved.”

Some of the key findings from the inspection include:

  • People were treated with respect and dignity. Staff were matched with people based on their interests, hobbies and life experiences. This allowed them to build positive and meaningful relationships, to know the individual well and to understand what mattered to them.
  • There was a strong emphasis on safety. Staff recognised and were proactive in reducing risk. For example, an innovative mobile lifting chair was used to help people up when they had fallen, this prevented unnecessary hospital admissions.
  • The service encouraged staff to speak up when things may have gone wrong. This was to allow for wider lessons to be learned and safety to be improved.
  • People were involved in their care and benefitted from an exceptionally personalised service. Staff were highly trained and knowledgeable to support and anticipate people’s needs.
  • The carer of the month scheme recognised, re-enforced and rewarded positive staff values, attitudes and behaviours.  The service also worked with Devon County Council to positively promote careers in care.
  • The service worked in partnership with local organisations to develop innovative and flexible joined up care. This improved the health and well-being for people. This also contributed to the successful re-opening a closed community hospital.
