The Care Quality Commission has found the quality of care provided by Vision Mental Health Limited in Elstree, Hertfordshire, to be Outstanding following an inspection in October.

Vision Mental Health Limited is a high dependency inpatient rehabilitation unit, registered to provide inpatient treatment for up to 30 people with a mental health diagnosis who may also be detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.

The location inspected is called Cornerstone House. The service provides assessment, treatment and a recovery based approach. Vision Mental Health Limited is also able to continue to support patients following their discharge if required.

Inspectors found staff were caring and compassionate and people were being provided with safe, responsive, caring, effective and well-led care. A full inspection report has been published on our website.

Under CQC’s programme of inspections, all independent mental health services are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Cornerstone House is rated Outstanding for being caring, safe and well-led and Good for being effective and responsive.

CQC’s Deputy Chief Inspector of Hospitals (and lead for mental health), Dr Paul Lelliott, said:

“Our inspection team was really impressed by the level of care and support offered to patients at Cornerstone House, which we found gave them an enhanced sense of quality of life and well-being."

“Patients and their relatives told inspectors that staff were very kind, caring, respectful and motivated. Staff told us they were proud to work for this service."

“People were active participants in their care and were respected and valued as individuals. Staff invited families to be involved in care and treatment if the patient had consented. The individual preferences and needs of people were consistently reflected in how staff delivered care."

“All staff had a holistic approach to assessing, planning and delivering care and treatment to patients. Every patient had a comprehensive assessment upon admission to the service."

“Staff empowered patients to have a voice and realise their potential through different forums which included daily community meetings, monthly patient forum meetings and lessons learnt meetings."

“There was a great commitment towards continual improvement and innovation. The senior managers worked with a local provider to innovate and improve and took examples of outstanding practice to apply to this service."

“All of this meant people received a high standard of care, which is why it has been rated Outstanding.”
