Heronsmede in Berkshire has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality commission following an inspection in September 2018.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being effective and responsive to people’s needs and Good for being safe, caring and well-led.  The overall rating was Outstanding.

Heronsmede is a care home where people receive accommodation and nursing or personal care. There were 8 people using the service at the time of the inspection.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector, Adult Social Care, said;

“It is always encouraging to find a service where people are placed at the heart of the service, and are consistently involved in all aspects of their care. The staff clearly promoted choice,  independence and inclusion which was visible in everything the service did and quality of the care provided.

“People received care from staff who were extremely effective and who had adopted a ‘can-do’ attitude to supporting people to live life to the full. I would like to congratulate the service on attaining an overall rating of Outstanding.”

Some of the key findings from the inspection include:

  • People benefitted from kind and compassionate staff who were committed to improving their health and wellbeing. Staff had the knowledge and skills to support meet people’s complex needs. Staff also showed great skill in observing and interpreting and communicating their wishes.
  • Staff used innovative ways to help those with complex health needs to overcome issues that could impede people’s lives and to help them live life to the full.
  • People were involved in decisions about their care. The service worked with people and their families to make sure their wishes were respected. Care plans were extremely personalised to reflect their likes, dislikes and interests and preferences.
  • People received exceptional care from staff who were motivated, enthusiastic and proud of their role. The management staff led by example, people were involved and consulted about developing the service and staff were recognised and rewarded through ‘Carer of the month/year’ schemes.
  • The service had an extremely person-centred approach and comprehensive care plans supported people to achieve positive outcomes. The design of the premises also showed that the service was fully committed to meeting the needs of people with specific disabilities.
