Haringey’s West Green Surgery has been rated Outstanding overall by the Care Quality Commission.
The practice, in West Green Road, Tottenham, was rated Outstanding for being responsive and well-led. It was rated Good for being safe, effective and caring, following the inspection in March 2019. Previously it was rated Good overall.
Services were tailored to meet the needs of individual patients. They were delivered in a flexible way that ensured choice and continuity of care.
The practice had identified areas where there were gaps in provision locally and had taken steps to address them.
West Green Surgery created and embedded a computer process which alerted prescribers to how many times antibiotics had been prescribed to a patient in the past year. The alert included a link to a patient’s care plan which meant the clinician had the chance to discuss treatment options with the patient. This had helped reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing by 30% between March 2015 and December 2017.
The enhanced alert and care plan were supported by Haringey Clinical Commissioning Group’s Medicine Management Team and was rolled out to all practices within the borough.
The culture of the practice and the way it was led, drove the delivery and improvement of high-quality, person-centred care.
However, there were some areas where the practice should make improvements:
- The practice should continue to review their diagnosis and prescribing for urinary tract infections and ensure they are in line with national guidance.
- The practice should review and improve their processes for cancer screening and ensure they are in line with national guidance.
- The practice should continue with efforts to identify and provide support patients who identify themselves as carers.
Head of Inspection for Primary Medical Services in London, Antony Hall, said: “I am delighted that West Green Surgery has been rated as Outstanding overall. Its use of technology to treat patients is both innovative and impressive.
“It has now leapt from Good to Outstanding and I congratulate everybody that has worked hard to achieve this splendid rating.”
