Ian Trenholm, Chief Executive of the Care Quality Commission, said:

"Following the Health and Social Care Select Committee’s hearing, I welcome the decision by the Secretary of State to appoint Ian Dilks as the new Chair of the Care Quality Commission.

"Having been Chair of NHS Resolution for almost seven years, Ian brings with him a keen understanding of the healthcare landscape, and in particular the importance of safety and learning in improving people’s care.

“This, coupled with his long and distinguished career at PricewaterhouseCoopers, gives him a breadth of experience that will be invaluable as we continue our journey, becoming more responsive and targeted in our approach to ensuring that people get good, safe care. I very much look forward to working with him.

“I would also like to thank Peter Wyman, who has been CQC’s Chair since 2016, for his enormous contribution in shaping the direction of the organisation over the last six years.”

Ian Dilks OBE said:

“It is an honour to have been appointed as Chair of the Care Quality Commission.

“The new powers CQC has been granted to assess local authorities on the delivery of their social care duties and to have oversight of Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) make this an especially exciting time to join the organisation.

“Improving quality and safety and reducing inequalities will be central to the role of ICSs. CQC will have a critical role to play in providing assurance on progress towards the delivery of excellent, joined-up care that meets the needs of the populations ICSs serve, and supporting change through the dissemination of good practice.

“I look forward to working with and listening to people who use services, their carers and families, health and care providers and CQC’s own staff as we develop our approach.”

The role of CQC Chair is appointed by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in accordance with the Cabinet Office’s Code of Governance for Public Appointments.

Ian Dilks was confirmed as the government’s preferred candidate in January 2021. The Secretary of State has taken the final decision following a hearing with the Health and Social Care Select Committee on 22 February 2022.

It is a three-year role and Ian Dilks will begin on 1 April 2022. The position carries an annual salary of £63,000.
