The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated Bridgemary Medical Centre in Gosport, Hampshire, Good overall and removed it from special measures.
The service was previously rated Inadequate following inspections which took place in June 2019 and January 2020, when several significant concerns came to light.
The practice was put into special measures in 2019 after inspectors found that it did not have clear systems and processes to keep patients safe, and care and treatment was not delivered in line with current legislation. It was also unable to demonstrate that its leaders had the capacity and skills to deliver high quality care, and that staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to safely carry out their roles.
On 2 December 2020 CQC returned to carry out a further comprehensive inspection. Following this, the service was rated Good for providing safe, caring, responsive and well-led services. It was rated Requires Improvement for its effectiveness, but Good overall.
CQC’s Deputy Chief Inspector for primary medical services, Dr Manir Hussain, said:
“I am pleased to report that significant improvements have been made at Bridgemary Medical Centre. The overall culture has improved, and stronger leadership has resulted in better strategic planning as well as the introduction of effective systems to identify and manage risks.
“The practice is now providing care in a way that keeps patients safe and protected from avoidable harm. As a result, it has now been removed from special measures which were put in place to give people who use the service reassurance that the care they receive should improve.”
During the latest visit, CQC inspectors found:
- The way in which the practice was led and managed promoted high-quality care for patients
- The premises were clean, and any associated risks had been identified and managed
- Patients could access care and treatment when they needed it
- Staff treated patients with kindness and respect and involved them in decisions about their care
The practice, which is part of NHS Fareham and Gosport Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), provides general medical services to around 9,000 registered patients in the Gosport region.
Full details of the inspection are given in the report published on the CQC website here.
