The Care Quality Commission has found the quality of care provided by the Haxby Group as Outstanding. Two practices run by the group, one in York the other in Hull were inspected by the CQC in November 2018.
The CQC looked at the way in which the Haxby Group delivered care.
The report identifies a number of areas of outstanding features including:
At the York surgery, The Village, Wiggington, the practice offered patients the opportunity to self-administer an injectable contraceptive that was a suitably licensed preparation for patient self-administration. The practice nursing team provided
education and support to patients. The service gave patients choice and increased the availability of nurse appointments.
The practice had recognised that the number of carers they had identified was low and had introduced measures to increase the numbers identified. The number of carers identified in York had increased from 773 in 2017 to 1055 because of these measures.
At the Kingswood practice, Hull, the Group had implemented effective services for their patients including effective approaches to flu and childhood immunisations. They could demonstrate the positive impact this had for patient outcomes.
In addition, it was designated an Advanced Training Practice (ATP) hub and was
instrumental in supporting pre- registration student nurses to have clinical placement experience, to encourage them to consider practice nursing at the point of qualification.
Beverley Cole, Head of General Practice – North Primary Medical Services & Integrated Care
“I offer my congratulations to the staff of both practices. We inspected the Haxby Group because of their collaborative working methods that are clearly bringing benefits to patients. Both practices have been rated as Outstanding.
“The group had won numerous awards for their service model. Three members of the nursing team had been awarded the Queens’ Nurse award for service to primary care the most recent in 2016, including leadership, learning and high standards of patient care.
“I was encouraged to see that the practice had a business support team which ran across the whole organisation with a view to standardising processes in the group. This included the implementation of cross-city peer review. The business support team had a range of responsibilities including allocating correspondence to GPs, recall of patients for reviews, assisting with audits, research and data analysis. The practice had strong links with the universities of Hull and York and participated in research and audits.
“All feedback received from patients was very positive regarding the care they received. The Group had a strong background of bringing new roles into primary care to increase the workforce, including paramedics, pharmacists, trainee physician associates and primary care practitioners. The aim was to provide the ‘right care, for the right patient, at the right time’, and to manage the demand for same day appointments.
“What makes Haxby Group practices outstanding is their proactive approach to quality and sustainability of primary care. They have introduced new roles, for example paramedics and primary care practitioners and have established competency frameworks for staff at all levels to ensure that they are well trained and supported. Feedback from staff was extremely positive.”
