The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust as Good following an inspection.

A team of inspectors from the Care Quality Commission visited the trust during January 2020 to check the quality of four core services - medical care (including older people’s care), critical care, maternity, and services for children and young people. CQC also looked specifically at management and leadership to answer the key question: is the trust well led?

The trust retains its Good overall rating. It also retains its rating of Outstanding for being caring, Good for being effective, responsive and well-led and Requires Improvement for being safe.

CQC’s Deputy Chief Inspector of Hospitals, Nigel Acheson, said:

“Musgrove Park Hospital continues to provide a Good service to the people of Taunton and Somerset, with services rated Outstanding for caring.

“I am pleased that during this inspection we have been able to record improvements in areas to some services – notably with medical care and services for children and young people, both moving from Requires Improvement to Good for safety. The trust knows what improvements it must make to improve other services which remain Requires Improvement in safety. It has a dedicated management team who understood the challenges the organisation faced and were committed to sustainable care that extended beyond the borders of the hospital.

“The trust needs to continue its focus on patient safety, where we require further improvements. We will continue to monitor the trust’s performance and to check on further progress.”
