The Shelley Care Home in Shelley Road, Worthing, West Sussex has been rated Outstanding in all five areas by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in February.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being safe, effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well-led. The overall rating was Outstanding.

The Shelley Care Home is a residential care home that provides accommodation for up to 32 older people with a variety of health and support needs. There were 29 people in residence at the time of the inspection.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, said;

“The Shelley Care Home is a service that has consistently demonstrated its commitment to providing high quality, person-centred care. It has at the very heart of its operation a culture which promotes a level of caring which goes beyond doing “just a job” where staff work to increase the confidence and opportunities for the people using the service and foster emotional well-being by supporting people’s diverse interests. Examples of this include organising activities such as bringing animals in for animal enthusiasts and having a local MP attend to talk about life in Westminster to cater to those who had an interest in politics.

“The service was rated Outstanding overall after our previous inspection in September 2015 and I am delighted that the quality of care provided has continued to improve so that The Shelley Care Home has not only achieved a second Outstanding overall rating but is also now rated Outstanding in all areas.

“The staff and management are to be commended and should be proud of the compassionate, supportive, person-centred care they are providing”

Key findings from the inspection include;

  • The day to day culture of the home was that of high quality care, delivered by staff who cherished people, cared about their wellbeing and also promoted keeping people independent. Staff told inspectors they did not feel that caring for people was, "Just a job", but demonstrated they had the right values which meant they enjoyed caring for people and went out of their way to enhance people's lives. Other comments to inspectors included "There is nothing to stop me doing anything I want to do. In fact we are positively encouraged to be as independent as we can be….”
  • People received an exceptionally high standard of personalised care that was responsive to their needs. Staff demonstrated that they knew people's backgrounds and histories before they came to live at the home and linked them up with other residents who shared similar interests. For example, two people started their friendship because they had both worked in the medical profession and enjoyed chatting about medical issues.
  • Comments to inspectors regarding the care received were overwhelmingly positive and people were effusive in their praise for staff. Comments included "The staff are delightful. They call me by the name I prefer. The attention you get is excellent and all the staff are kindness itself" and "The staff are all you could ask for. They know my likes and dislikes and it's lovely to have someone who wants to care for me….”
  • People were involved in every aspect of developing the service including interviewing new staff as part of the recruitment process, proof reading and correcting some documentation about details of the staffing team and even balancing the petty cash for the service. People were able to utilise the skills they had built up during their working lives to assist the service by this involvement.
