The Care Quality Commission has rated Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust as Good overall.

CQC visited the trust during January 2019 and February 2019 to check the quality of seven core services – the emergency department (minor injuries unit), outpatients, medicine, community adults, community inpatients, community end of life, and rehabilitation services at Mardon Neuro-rehabilitation Centre. Inspectors also looked specifically at the trust’s management and leadership to answer the key question: Is the trust well led?

The trust is rated as Outstanding for caring, Good for being effective, responsive to people’s needs and well-led, and Requires Improvement for being safe. Inspectors visited the trust’s renal services as an addition to the inspection and rated it Outstanding.

CQC has also published the trust’s Use of Resources (UoR) report, which is based on an assessment undertaken by NHS Improvement. The trust has been rated as Good for using its resources productively. Its combined UoR and Quality rating is Good.

You can read the latest reports in full here www.cqc.org.uk/provider/RH8, once the report has been published on the CQC website.

Mary Cridge, CQC’s Head of Hospital Inspection for the south west, said:

“This is the first full inspection we have undertaken at Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust since changing the way we inspect. The changes include a deeper assessment of the leadership of the whole trust. There have been changes at the trust too – not least the appointment of a new chief executive and the addition of community services.

“Our inspectors found there was a strong caring culture within the trust, with staff committed to ensuring patient needs came first. Staff and leaders worked hard to deliver the best possible care with compassion and respect.

“Inspectors saw many areas of outstanding practice where care was delivered by caring and knowledgeable staff. Several teams led by example with a continuous focus on quality improvement. This was especially evident in renal services which is rated as Outstanding.

“We will continue to monitor the trust and our inspectors will return to check on its further improvements in due course.”
