The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated Elizabeth Street Surgery in Elizabeth Street, Blackpool, inadequate overall and placed it in special measures. Previously it was rated good.

CQC carried out an announced inspection in April after receiving concerns regarding the lack of effective systems in place to ensure the safe delivery of care to patients.

Following this inspection, the Elizabeth Street Surgery was rated inadequate in relation to whether it was safe, effective, responsive and well-led, and requires improvement in relation to it being caring. It was rated inadequate overall.

CQC’s deputy chief inspector for primary medical services, Victoria Watkins said:

"Following the inspection of Elizabeth Street Surgery, we told the provider they must make significant improvements in a number of areas to bring the service in line with legal requirements and to keep people safe.

“A new provider has taken over the running of the practice, since our last inspection. We will work with the provider and other stakeholders to ensure people receive the high-quality care and treatment they deserve.”

Following the inspection, CQC told the provider that it must make the following improvements:

  • Ensure that care and treatment is provided in a safe way to patients.
  • Ensure that any complaint received is investigated and any proportionate action is taken in response to any failure identified by the complaint or investigation.
  • Establish effective systems and processes to ensure good governance in accordance with the fundamental standards of care.

Full details of the inspection are given in the report published online here.
