The Care Quality Commission has found significant improvements at the Addiction Recovery Centre in Cosham, Portsmouth following an inspection in April this year.

The Addiction Recovery Centre Portsmouth is a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation service, which provides alcohol and drug detoxification treatment and therapies to support recovery. Accommodation for clients using the services is provided in four houses owned by the service.

As a result of this inspection Addiction Recovery Centre has been rated Good overall, and Good for being safe, effective, caring, responsive to peoples’ needs and well led. Previously the service was rated as Inadequate and had been placed into special measures. The service has now exited special measures.

Karen Bennet-Wilson, CQC’s Head of Hospital Inspection for mental health in the South, said:

“Since we last inspected, staff at the Addiction Recovery Centre have worked to ensure that improvements have been thoroughly embedded. I am pleased that the service has taken to heart the findings from our previous inspection reports and built on them to provide improved services.

"We found at the Addiction Recovery Centre a strong person-centred culture with staff committed to keeping their people safe, and encouraging them to be independent. Peoples’ needs came first and all staff worked hard to deliver the best possible care with compassion and respect.

People using the service  had access to a full range of specialists required to meet their needs. Staff worked well together and with those outside the service who would provide aftercare.

Staff treated clients with compassion and kindness, they respected their privacy and dignity and understood the individual needs of their clients

All staff worked to recognised best practice for substance misuse treatment. Managers had the skills, knowledge and experience to perform their roles, they were visible in the service and approachable for clients and staff. Leaders had undertaken additional training and development, and new comprehensive processes had been implemented which ensured that service procedures ran smoothly.
