The Care Quality Commission has appointed John Milne, a practising dentist in West Yorkshire and the current Chair of the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee, as Senior National Dental Adviser.

In this role, John will work closely with CQC’s primary medical services’ senior management team and inspectors, along with dental providers and stakeholders, to help develop our new model. John will also work with our inspection teams to give expert advice on professional practice in dental care.

John will take on the role in March this year, after his role as Chair of the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee comes to an end.

John Milne said: “I’m extremely happy to take on this new role with the CQC. I think it’s an exciting time in the development of the regulation of dental services, and it’s vital we get it right.

“We need to ensure we listen to the voice of dentists and understand the considerable pressure and challenges they face on a day-to-day basis, balanced with the need to ensure patients receive the quality care we all agree they should expect to receive.”

Janet Williamson, CQC’s Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice, said: “I am very pleased John has agreed to join CQC.

“John brings with him a wealth of experience. His expertise and insight into what quality care looks like, and his ability to challenge us on the implications of regulation will be invaluable.”

Professor Steve Field, Chief Inspector of General Practice, said: “I am thrilled that John is joining us. He has a vast understanding of dentistry and will a tremendous addition to our team.”

Following a public consultation which closed on 23 January, CQC will be publishing its final provider handbook for dentistry before it rolls out its new approach in April. You can find out more about the new approach proposals.
