The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found the quality of care provided by Clifton House and Nook Group Practice in Huddersfield to be Good following an inspection in February.

CQC published a report in August last year rating the service as Inadequate and placed the practice into special measures. The concerns identified at that time included issues with staff training and health outcomes for patients being lower than the national average. Inspectors saw limited activity to drive improvements at the practice.

Since this inspection, the practice has implemented changes that the CQC asked to be made. These changes have improved patient care and see the practice’s rating change from Inadequate to Good.

The practice is rated Good for each of the key questions of safe, caring, responsive and well-led, and Requires Improvement for effective.

Beverley Cole, Head of General Practice in the North of England, said:

“At an inspection in June 2017 we did not believe that Clifton House and Nook Group Practice was likely to resolve its challenges without being placed into special measures."

“The practice was rated as Inadequate at that time, as we were not assured that the care being provided was effective, and the practice was not being well-led."

“Since that inspection, there is now an open and transparent approach to safety as well as reporting and learning from incidents, and we have seen significant improvements in the level of care being provided."

“We now see a practice that has a focus on continuous improvement which is great news for people using their services. The improvements that the provider has made are impressive, and now they must prove that they are able to sustain them over time.”

Inspectors found that the practice had made significant progress in addressing concerns that had been identified in June 2017.

Key findings at this inspection included:

  • There was an open and transparent approach to safety and a system in place for reporting and recording significant events.
  • The practice had clearly defined systems to minimise risks to patient safety.
  • There was now a focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.
