Sunrise of Sonning care home in Old Bath Road, Reading, Berkshire has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in March.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being effective, responsive to people’s needs and well-led and Good for being safe and caring. The overall rating was Outstanding.

Sunrise of Sonning is run by two companies, Sunrise Senior Living Limited and Sunrise UK Operations Limited. The service provides nursing and personal care for up to 103 people, some of whom are living with dementia. There were 87 people using the service at the time of the inspection.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, said;

“This is a service where the staff and management are clearly passionate about providing personalised care and have created an environment where people are treated with compassion, dignity and respect. People and their relatives were overwhelmingly positive about the high quality, individualised care that was provided by the staff.

“The staff and management should be proud of their achievement in attaining our highest rating and I would like to congratulate them on their provision of high quality care.”

Key findings from the inspection include;

  • People were supported by extremely kind and caring staff. All of the comments we received during the inspection, without exception, reflected how staff consistently put the people first and inspectors observed staff being considerate of people and their relatives, positive and respectful.
  • The staff and management teams showed a genuine and in-depth understanding and compassion for people they supported. They had a number of schemes and initiatives in place driving improvement and continuously encouraging innovation to benefit people in the service.
  • People were able to engage in a wide range of meaningful activities and maintain regular links with the community. This helped them avoid becoming isolated. People really enjoyed getting involved in activities and outings because it made them feel busy and useful.
  • The service placed a great emphasis on enabling people to live as full a life as possible. They found out people's likes and dislikes so they could be incorporated meaningfully into an activity for each person. Inspectors observed some of these activities and they were well attended, lively and cheerful. People were encouraged to get involved and their efforts were always praised.
