The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has today (Tuesday, 24 March) published reports following inspections at two hospitals run by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Inspectors visited the emergency departments at The York Hospital and Scarborough Hospital and medical services at Scarborough Hospital on 13 and 14 January 2020.

As a result of the inspections CQC has rated both emergency departments as Inadequate. Medical services at Scarborough Hospital were not rated as part of this inspection.

CQC took enforcement action as a result of the inspections placing restrictions on the trust’s registration and it issued a warning to the trust requiring it to make immediate improvements. This means that the trust had to submit an action plan for improvements to CQC and update the Commission monthly on its progress.

CQC will return to check on improvements at both The York Hospital and Scarborough Hospitals.

These inspections were unannounced and focused and do not affect the overall ratings for the trust.

The trust was last inspected in June and July 2019 when it was rated as Requires Improvement overall as well as for whether its services are safe and well-led and it is rated as Good for whether its services are effective, caring and responsive.
