A Barnet surgery that was rated Inadequate and placed into special measures has now been rated Good overall by the Care Quality Commission.

The Village Surgery in East Barnet Road, which looks after more than 5,000 people, was rated Good for being safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led, following the inspection in September 2018.

CQC inspectors found that:

  • Systems were in place to ensure the safe management of high risk medicines.
  • Information about services and how to complain was available.
  • Improvements were made to the quality of care as a result of complaints and concerns.
  • The practice was able to provide evidence that processes for managing pathology results and patient safety alerts were improved and staff were adhering to the improved protocols.
  • The practice had good facilities and was well equipped to treat patients and meet their needs.
  • Systems for managing staff training and induction were significantly improved.
  • There was a clear leadership structure and staff felt supported by management.
  • Staff training and induction had significantly improved.
  • There was an open and transparent approach to safety.

Patient feedback was significantly above the local and national averages.

Urgent appointments are available each day and GPs also provide telephone consultations for patients. An out of hours service is available when the practice is shut.

The practice had appropriate systems to safeguard children and vulnerable adults from abuse.

Staff treated patients with kindness, respect and compassion. Staff helped patients be involved in decisions about care and treatment.

Professor Ursula Gallagher, CQC Deputy Chief Inspector of GP Practices, said: “I am very pleased that The Village Surgery has improved to such an extent that it is now improved from Inadequate to Good overall and is now out of special measures.

“The management and staff at the practice deserve fulsome praise for the way they have turned the surgery around to one that is providing good quality to its patients.

“At this inspection we found that the practice had sustained the improvements we had noted at our focused inspection in June 2018.”
