Wexham Park Hospital was rated as inadequate in February 2014.

The hospital recognised how important it was to understand the needs of the diverse local community. Staff enabled patients to express themselves using their spoken language when entering the Emergency Department (ED):

  • doctors wrote down what language each patient spoke at every ward round
  • staff working in the ED recorded the languages they spoke on a whiteboard
  • a leaflet in a variety of languages explained how translators were available

All staff therefore knew what languages were spoken by both staff working that shift and individual patients. They could match patients to staff or translators with the relevant language skills so they could communicate fully with each other.

Following re-inspection in October 2015, the hospital was rated as good.
