The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated St Mary’s Riverside in Hessle, as outstanding following its first inspection in April.

St Mary's Riverside is a residential care home providing accommodation, personal and nursing care for up to 61 people.

As well as St Mary’s Riverside’s overall rating of outstanding, its ratings for how well-led and caring are also outstanding, and good for how safe, effective and responsive.

Jenny Wilkes, CQC deputy director of operations in the north, said:

“When we inspected St Mary’s Riverside, people we spoke to were overwhelmingly positive about the exceptional levels of care and support they got from staff and managers. It was lovely to see such an excellent variety of activities and events that were organised by the home ensuring people led meaningful and interesting lives.

“The atmosphere in the home was extremely warm and welcoming and people told us the care they received exceeded their expectations. Staff went above and beyond to ensure people were treated with care, dignity, and respect.

“People were encouraged and supported to maximise their independence. One person had been admitted to the home unable to walk. Through patience and encouragement from staff the person's mobility improved and they were now able to walk independently using a mobility aid.

“We found this to be a well-led and extremely caring service that focused on people’s needs and the whole team deserve to be congratulated for all their hard work and commitment. Other services can look to it as an example of the high standards of care people should expect.”

Inspectors found:

  • Staffing levels were sufficient to meet people's needs safely, and ensured people received consistent support
  • Risks to people had been fully assessed and mitigated to help keep people safe
  • People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests
  • Medicines were administered safely to people and staff were observed following safe infection prevention control practices
  • Managers ensured staff were suitably skilled and trained to carry out their roles to meet people's complex and diverse needs
  • Staff were extremely committed to providing care that was compassionate and provided the best outcomes for people.
