The Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out an inspection of the dental department at Kingston Hospital, Surrey, in June, as part of a pilot project to further develop CQC’s monitoring of services.
The inspection was carried out to assess whether the service was safe, effective, and well-led, after responding to a direct monitoring call. In line with CQC’s oral health methodology, the inspection did not generate a rating.
Kingston Hospital, which is part of Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is rated good overall, while the trust is rated outstanding.
The inspection of the hospital’s dental services found that:
- The service had enough staff to care for patients and keep them safe
- Staff had training in key skills and understood how to protect patients from abuse
- The premises and equipment were clean and well-maintained, and infection risk was controlled well
- Care was person-centred with people’s physical, mental health and social needs met by staff
- Urgent referrals were dealt with efficiently
- The service managed patient safety well and incidents were reported and learnt from
- Medicines and treatment were safe and well-managed, and pain relief was given in a timely way
- Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals worked together for the benefit of patients
- The service was well-led.
