The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found the quality of care provided by the Compass House Medical Centres in Brixham, Devon to be Outstanding following an inspection carried out in May 2015.
Inspectors rated the practice as Outstanding for providing responsive and well led services, and Good for providing services that are safe, caring and effective. The practice has received an overall rating of Outstanding.

Under CQC’s new programme of inspections, all England’s GP practices are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.
Ruth Rankine, Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice in the South, said:
“It is clear Compass House Medical Centres is providing a well led and highly responsive service which is a real asset to the people living in this part of Devon.
“I was particularly impressed with the practice’s proactive work, particularly for younger patients. We found that staff demonstrated a sound understanding of the differing needs of their patients and acted on these needs in the planning and delivery of its services.
“It is clear a great deal of planning and hard work has paid off in making a real difference to patients – which is why we have found the practice to be Outstanding.”
Linda Prosser, Director of Commissioning for NHS England in the South West, said:
“This is a real tribute to the staff at Compass House and the standard of care they provide. It’s only the second ‘outstanding’ rating we’ve seen within South Devon and Torbay, but this shows what can be achieved and how it is patients who reap the benefits.”
The report on Compass House Medical Centres highlighted a number of areas of outstanding practice, including:
The practice had a young person friendly clinic providing easy access to anonymous chlamydia screening and a condom card scheme called the “C Card Scheme”, a confidential service which enabled patients aged 13-24 years old to get free condoms as well as sexual health information and advice. The local authority informed us that this scheme had achieved a positive impact, decreasing sexually transmitted disease and unwanted pregnancy rates within Torbay.
The practice nominated an executive GP partner on a rotational basis every three years to lead the practice and drive continuous improvement.
The practice carried out online face to face communication using virtual clinics for patients with diabetes in order to support less mobile patients and to reduce patient’s frequency of visits to the practice.
