TThe Care Quality Commission has rated Westcountry Case Management Limited in Lowe little Green, Teignmouth, Devon as Outstanding following an inspection in November and December 2019

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being responsive to people’s needs, well led, safe, effective and caring. The overall rating was Outstanding.

Westcountry Case Management is a specialist agency which provides case management support and advice to children and adults who have sustained complex life changing injuries such as an acquired brain injury, spinal injury or cerebral palsy

Amanda Stride, Head of Adult Social Care Inspection, said:

“Westcountry Case Management Limited is supporting people to live their lives to the fullest and in line with their backgrounds, beliefs or lifestyle choices.

“The culture of the service was one of compassion, and an encouragement to be as independent as possible. This was demonstrated in all that the staff did and their interactions with people at the home. I would like to congratulate the service on attaining an overall rating of Outstanding.”

Some of the key findings from the inspection include:

People were matched to a staff team. For example, if a person spoke Welsh then so did the team and documents were in the Welsh language. One young person enjoyed playing a computer game with staff. Staff helped the person develop their interest in blogging and learning about computer programming.

Staff understood the importance of independent advocacy. They were proactive in asking for such advocacy for people using the service. People's voices were heard, and their views regularly sought including how they were supported to make decisions.

The service promoted a positive culture which was person centred and inclusive. People were supported to regain control over their lives after massive life changing injuries and trauma. There was a clear commitment by all staff working in the service to provide a very high standards of care and support and empower people to develop and regain skills. For example, care plans had psychological strategies for promoting successful activities. One person had a pre-visit to a football ground and a risk assessment to include down time to reduce fatigue on the day of the match.
