The Trafalgar Surgery in Southwark has been rated Good overall by the Care Quality Commission - previously it was Inadequate and in special measures.

The practice, which looks after around 4,180 patients in the Peckham and Nunhead areas of south-east London, was rated Good in all categories CQC rates: for being safe; effective; caring; responsive and well-led, following an inspection in January 2018.

At this inspection CQC found that the practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved its processes.

The practice had implemented defined and embedded systems to minimise risks to patient safety and staff were aware of current evidence based guidance. Staff had been trained to provide them with the skills and knowledge to deliver effective care and treatment.

The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence based guidelines.

Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

Information about services and how to complain was available. Patients said they found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.

There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.

However, the practice should alert patients when the practice is closed for training

events.

Acting Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice, Michele Golden said:

“It is always encouraging to see a practice work hard to improve its rating. The move from Inadequate and in special measures to Good is a big step and staff at The Trafalgar Surgery should be proud of what they have achieved.

“We are taking this service out of special measures. This recognises the significant improvements made to the quality of care provided.”
