A Somerset care home has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in November.

Grovelands in Grove Avenue, Yeovil, Somerset was rated Outstanding for being caring responsive to people’s needs and well-led and Good for being safe and effective. The overall rating was Outstanding.

Grovelands is a residential care home that specialises in the care of older people, including people living with dementia. There were 60 people living in the home at the time of the inspection.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector, Adult Social Care, said;

“Grovelands is a care home that has placed providing consistent, high quality, compassionate, person-centred care at the very heart of its operations. Their values and ethos enable residents live safely whilst maintaining their dignity and independence and this was observed by inspectors throughout the inspection."

“The service was rated Good overall after our previous inspection in October 2015 and I am delighted that the service has continued to improve the care provided and has now achieved our highest overall rating of Outstanding. The staff and management should be proud of this achievement”.

Some of the key findings from the inspection included:

  • People and relatives were overwhelmingly positive about the care they received and care staff won the 2017 Care Focus (South West) 'Outstanding Care Team' award in recognition of their work. One person who nominated the team for the award wrote on their nomination form, "I feel very well looked after. They are all very cheerful and make me feel loved." Inspectors observed a happy and welcoming atmosphere in the home throughout the inspection.
  • There was a real commitment to making sure all care was personalised to people's preferences and known lifestyle choices with people’s interests and hobbies respected and stimulated by staff. Examples of this included piano lessons being provided to one person once they revealed they used to play and museum visits for another person who recalled such visits from their youth.
  • The home had excellent links with the local community which helped people maintain their contacts and remain active participants in community events.
  • The home had been decorated and furnished in accordance with research which helped people living with dementia to maintain their independence. Bedroom doors were brightly coloured and there were memory boxes outside people's rooms which contained personal items that were important to people. These contents helped them to identify their own rooms and also gave talking points to help with conversations that were meaningful to them.
