Shepherd’s Bush Medical Centre has been rated Inadequate overall by the Care Quality Commission.

The practice in Uxbridge Road, in the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham was rated Inadequate for being safe, effective and well-led. It was rated Requires Improvement for being caring and responsive following the inspection in January 2019.

The practice did not learn and make improvements when things went wrong. It did not have appropriate systems in place for the same management of medicines. It did not have clear systems and processes to keep patients safe.

Receptionists had not been given guidance on identifying deteriorating or acutely unwell patients and they were not aware of what action to take in respect of such patients.

The practice was unable to show that staff had the skills, knowledge and skills to carry out their roles. Leaders at the practice could not show that they had the capacity and skills to deliver high quality, sustainable care.

There were limited systems in place to identify carers, including young carers, and to provide the relevant support.

The provider must now:

  • Ensure that care and treatment is provided in a safe way.
  • Establish effective systems and processes to ensure good governance in accordance with the fundamental standards of care.

However, patients made positive comments about the care and treatment they received. Patients could generally access care and treatment in a timely way and staff mostly dealt with patients with kindness and respect.

Head of Inspection for Primary Medical Services in London, Antony Hall, said: “Shepherd’s Bush Medical Centre was rated as Good overall the last time CQC rated it. It is most concerning to see the practice now with our lowest rating of Inadequate.

“We have placed the practice in special measures, which will give people who use the service the reassurance that the care they get should improve. We will inspect again within six months and expect to see considerable improvements.”
