A second time CQC rating of Outstanding for Leatside Surgery, Devon

The Care Quality Commission has found the quality of care provided by Leatside Surgery in Totnes, Devon to be Outstanding again following an inspection in March. This is the second time the service has been rated Outstanding overall.

Inspectors rated the care at the surgery Outstanding for being responsive and well-led, and Good for being safe, effective and caring.

Ruth Rankine, Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice, said;

“It is with pleasure that I am again delighted to highlight the exceptional service at Leatside Surgery. This practice is an excellent example of what outstanding care looks like. The service had clear vision to promote safe and quality care with high standards being promoted by all staff to all members of the community. 

“There was a strong focus on continuous improvements to its services and valued the concerns raised by staff and people.  

“This dedication and commitment pays off in making a real difference for their patients – which is why we have again found the practice to be Outstanding. I hope other practices will see this service as a model for excellent care.” 

Key findings from the inspection include;

  • The practice took a leadership role in the local health and social care community to identify and proactively address challenges and meet the needs of the practice population.
  • There were consistently high levels of constructive engagement with staff, stakeholders and people who used the services. Rigorous and constructive challenge was welcomed and seen as a vital way of holding services to account and improving services
  • The practice had a dedicated early visiting GP with the aim of avoiding admissions or reducing the wait for elderly patients in the emergency department.
  • The practice work closely and effectively with the support of the ‘Caring Town Rough Sleepers’ group and had secured a community drug and alcohol practitioner to run an outreach clinic in Totnes.
