Malden House in Sidford Road, Sidmouth, Devon has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission following a recent inspection.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well-led and Good for being safe. The overall rating was Outstanding.

Malden House is a care home which provides accommodation and support to older people living with dementia.

Nicky Nendick, Head of Inspection, Adult Social Care, said;

“Malden House is a service that promotes an ethos of an extended family atmosphere and is committed to providing care in a compassionate, person-centred manner. It is clear that the vision and values of the staff and management which focus on people’s wellbeing, having a sense of purpose in life, and also encouraging people to continue with their outside interests and hobbies has an overall positive effect on the lives of those using the service.

“The service was rated Good overall after our previous inspection in October 2015 and I am delighted that the provision of high quality, individualised care has continued to improve. I would like to congratulate all those involved for attaining our highest overall rating of Outstanding.

Some of the key findings from the inspection included:

  • Staff developed exceptionally positive caring and compassionate relationships with people and comments to inspectors regarding the quality of care were overwhelmingly positive. Comments included "It's delightful living here" and "It's easy to forget you're not still living in your own home”.
  • The service had developed an innovative weekly 'Tiny feet club' where children and grandchildren of relatives and staff spent time together. These sessions contributed to improving people's wellbeing.
  • Staff were motivated, enthusiastic and felt proud to work at the service. They consistently commented on good teamwork, communication and told inspectors they felt the management were both approachable and supportive.
  • The service had a positive culture that was person-centred, open, inclusive and empowering. The registered manager set clear expectations of the standards expected, through coaching,goal setting and positive role modelling. A 'Hartford Heroes' provider award scheme recognised, re-enforced and rewarded positive staff values, attitudes and behaviours.
