Lansdowne Hill Care Home in Wharf Road, Swindon, Wiltshire has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission following a recent inspection.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being caring and well-led and Good for being safe, effective and responsive to people’s needs. The overall rating was Outstanding.

Lansdowne Hill Care Home is a service which provides accommodation for up to 46 people living with dementia, physical disabilities or sensory impairments. There were 43 people using the service at the time of the inspection.

Rebecca Bauers, Head of Inspection, Adult Social Care, said;

“The staff and management of Lansdowne Hill Care Home have demonstrated their commitment to providing exceptional, high quality, person-centred care where people’s well-being and happiness is at the very heart of its operation.

“The service was rated Good overall after our previous inspection in January 2016 and I am delighted that the standard of care provided has continued to improve and has now achieved our highest overall rating of Outstanding. The staff and management should be proud of this achievement and I would like to extend my congratulations to them”

Some of the key findings from the inspection included:

  • Inspectors observed examples of staff providing high quality, compassionate care and treating people with dignity and respect. This reflected the values that staff held and the culture of the service 'being more than a job'. People told inspectors they felt well cared for and were offered emotional support when needed. Relatives were also overwhelmingly positive about the standard of care provided.
  • People received care and support that was based on their individual needs and preferences and were encouraged to develop friendships outside the service including participating in a scheme involving children from the local school coming to read to them. This arrangement proved mutually beneficial to both residents and the children and provided meaningful input back into the local community.
  • Another example of the caring nature of staff was demonstrated by one staff member purchasing a robotic dog for people in the service. This proved to encourage positive interactions and increased happiness levels amongst both service users and relatives.
  • The management led by example by being good role models who demonstrated their values of operating a service with a family atmosphere ethos while promoting a positive, can-do culture. This meant that staff felt secure and were able to enjoy giving care.
