A Barnet general practice has improved from Inadequate to Good overall, following a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

Hendon Way Surgery, in Elliot Road, Barnet, has been rated Good for being safe, effective, caring and well-led. It was rated Requires Improvement for being responsive, following an inspection in July 2018.

At this latest inspection CQC found significant improvements at the practice.

There was a comprehensive system in place to ensure the safe management of high risk medicines.

The practice had good facilities and was well equipped to treat patients and meet their needs.

Systems for managing staff training and induction were significantly improved.

Improvements to governance systems had been made. For example, the practice provided evidence that processes for managing uncollected prescriptions and patient safety alerts had improved and staff were adhering to the revised protocols.

Patient feedback in relation to GP and Nurse consultations had improved.

There was an open and transparent approach to safety and a system in place for reporting and recording significant events.

There was a clear leadership structure and staff felt supported by management. The practice proactively sought feedback from staff and patients, which it acted upon.

Information about services and how to complain was available. Improvements were made to the quality of care because of complaints and concerns.

However, there are some areas where the practice should improve. These are:

  • Review processes with a view to improve patient satisfaction around access to the service and clinical consultations with GPs and nurses.
  • Improve how patients with caring responsibilities are identified and recorded on the patient record system to ensure information, advice and support is made available to them.
  • Continue to review the processes for improving the uptake of child immunisations, cervical screening, bowel cancer screening and breast cancer screening.

Professor Ursula Gallagher, CQC Deputy Chief Inspector of GP Practices, said:

“I am very pleased to see the significant improvements that have been made to the standard of care at Hendon Way Surgery.

“It’s always good to see a provider move forward from special measures to a Good rating. I encourage the practice to sustain these improvements to care and aim for an Outstanding rating next time.”
