A care home in Perranporth, Cornwall has been rated Inadequate overall by the Care Quality Commission.

Sunningdale House, in Boscawen Road, Perranporth, Cornwall, was rated Inadequate for being safe, effective, responsive to peoples’ needs and well-led. It was rated Requires Improvement for being caring following inspections in March and April 2018.

Sunningdale House, which is run by South West Care Homes Limited, is a care home which offered care and support for up to 36 predominately older people, some who are were living with dementia.

The service had been inspected in July 2017 and had been was rated as Good. In February 2018 CQC received serious concerns from health and social care professionals about the care that people received, because of this inspectors thought it best to bring forward the inspection date.

The concerns related to end of life planning, personal care needs not being met properly. Medication errors and medical concerns not being escalated to health professionals in a timely manner putting residents at risk. Staffing levels were at times too low and there was a lack of training opportunities. Staff told inspectors they were new to the role and did not have the correct skills or experience to undertake their role competently. Infection control practices were inadequate and there was a lack of confidence in record keeping, and a higher than expected number of deaths.

Nicky Nendick, CQC’s Head of inspection for Adult Social Care in the South West, said:

“We found systemic failings in the oversight and the monitoring of care at Sunningdale House. This resulted in inadequate measures in place that did not provide the right care, staff training or medication checks in place and safety checks were not robust enough to ensure the quality of care delivered was monitored and improved.”

“To ensure significant improvement took place CQC have imposed conditions upon the registration of the service, so that the provider could not admit people to to live at the Sunningdale House and the provider had to send CQC a fortnightly updated action report.

“The service now no longer has anyone living at Sunningdale House. The local authority removed all residents and the provider has applied for the service to be classed as dormant as they are currently not caring for anyone at the service.
