The Care Quality Commission has rated Holkham House in Princes Road, Redhill, Surrey as Outstanding following an inspection in October 2019.

Inspectors rated the service as Outstanding for being safe, caring and responsive to people’s needs, and Good for being effective and well-led.

Holkham House is a care home providing personal care for up to 10 people who may have a learning disability and associated condition, for example autism.

A full report of the inspection has been published here: www.cqc.org.uk/location/1-213869885

James Frewin, Head of Inspection for Adult Social Care, said:

“Holkham House is providing people with exceptional care personalised to their needs. Staff treated people as equals ensuring they felt safe and confident to be themselves, while promoting them to be independent. People's well-being was at the heart of everything the service did.

"The staff and leadership team in the service demonstrated a real passion for their work and aimed to reach the best possible outcomes and quality of life for people. I would like to congratulate everyone on attaining the rating of Outstanding."

The report highlights several areas of outstanding practice, including:

People were supported to understand and take positive risks to promote their independence. Video, easy read and pictorial formats were some of the methods used to support communication. People's individual care records detailed what support people needed to help them to access the community as independently as possible.

Staff were committed and compassionate. Inspectors observed people being supported in a kind, patient and sensitive manner. Staff used the right communication methods but also gave people time to understand. For example, some people had specific health needs which meant staff needed to spend longer with them to ensure they were listened to and knew and understood what was happening. This was done respectfully, and staff were unrushed in their approach. The provider's visions and values focused on inclusion and supporting people to live fulfilled lives.

People were encouraged and supported to be involved in the management and running of the service. For example, one person was employed to visit other services owned by the company to carry out quality checks. They carried out themed audits, for example on activities, menus and environmental checks.
