The Check House care home in Beer Road, Seaton, Devon has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission following a recent inspection.
Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being effective and responsive to people’s needs and Good for being safe, caring and well-led. The overall rating was Outstanding.
The Check House is a care home that provides personal care and support for up to 57 people living with dementia and older people living with frailty. There were 49 people resident at the time of the inspection.
Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, said;
“The Check House is a service where the management and staff are committed to working in a person-centred way. Their kind and compassionate approach towards the people in their care was evident throughout the inspection and it is clear that these attitudes form the ethos of the service.
“The service has fostered a culture of providing personalised care and created an environment where people are treated with kindness, equality, dignity and respect. People were overwhelmingly positive about the high quality, individualised care they received.
“The service was rated Good overall after our previous inspection in October 2015 and I am delighted that The Check House has continued to improve upon the standard of care provided and has now achieved our highest overall rating of Outstanding. The staff and management should be proud of their achievement”.
Key findings from the inspection include;
- People and relatives commented positively about the kindness of the staff. Staff had the training and support they needed to be able to support people effectively. Throughout the inspection staff communicated with people as adults rather than as patients who needed looking after. They treated people with compassion, dignity and respect.
- The environment was adapted for people living with dementia which reflected research and best practice to promote people’s independence and connection with their surroundings. This included the use of colour and contrast such as colourful dinner plates and tablecloths to ensure that the environment was as visually stimulating as possible and suited to the needs of those living with dementia.
- Another area had been transformed into a vintage railway carriage including mock railway carriage windows with countryside scenes with curtains either side. Staff told inspectors about the ways people reacted positively to this area, which encouraged topics of travel.
- People received support from staff who knew them well. Their care was person centred and tailored to their individual needs. Staff worked really hard to give people the opportunity to reach their potential.
