A Bermondsey surgery has been rated Inadequate overall following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.
Dr Alan M Campion’s practice in the London Borough of Southwark, south-east London, was rated as Inadequate for being safe and well-led. It was rated Requires Improvement for being effective, caring and responsive, following the inspection on 9 November 2017. At a previous inspection its rating was Good
CQC inspectors found:
The practice, also known as New Mill Street Surgery, had not taken action to assess or mitigate risks associated with fire, infection control legionella or health and safety.
There was limited evidence of learning from significant events. The complaints process also did not function effectively.
There was no effective system in place for monitoring urgent diagnostic referrals.
Medicines were not managed effectively. Inspectors found expired medicines in the practice fridges.
Not all staff had undertaken the required training and systems for recruitment and appraisals were ineffective or non-existent.
The areas where the provider must make improvements include:
- Ensuring sufficient numbers of suitably qualified, competent, skilled and experienced people are on duty to meet fundamental standards of care and treatment.
- Ensuring care and treatment is provided in a safe way to patients.
- Ensuring patients are protected from abuse and improper treatment.
- Ensuring recruitment procedures are established and operated effectively to ensure only fit and proper persons are employed.
The areas where the provider should make improvements are:
- Consider ways to highlight bereavement and translation services.
- Continue with planned work to upgrade the practice premises.
Professor Ursula Gallagher, CQC Deputy Chief Inspector of GP Practices, said:
“It is disappointing that Dr Alan M Campion’s practice is now Inadequate overall. At a previous inspection its rating was Good and this is a clear deterioration in the service provided to the people of Bermondsey. While we did find staff treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect - there is a lot of improvement required."
“We are placing this service in special measures to help it with that improvement. Services placed in special measures will be re-inspected after a period of six months.”
