Background to this inspection

Updated 15 May 2017

The Queen Anne Street practice – Room 4 is a specialist community mental health service for children and young people provided by Dr Clare Gates, Consultant Psychiatrist. The service was registered with the CQC in January 2013 to deliver the regulated activity: treatment of disease, disorder or injury.

The consultant psychiatrist is the sole practitioner at the service and offers child outpatient appointments to initially assess and treat children and young people on two half days each week. The service accepts referrals from across the United Kingdom from other mental health practitioners or doctors. The service does not accept self referrals. The majority of referrals are from private or independent child psychologists with whom the consultant has an established working relationship.

The service provides outpatient clinics for children, young people and families relating to adolescent and childhood depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders including attention deficit disorder and eating disorders. In 2016 30% of appointments were a “one off” assessment. The remaining 70% required follow up appointments with the majority seen for three to six more appointments.

The consultant psychiatrist at the service was the registered manager.

We have not previously inspected the service.

Overall inspection

Good

Updated 15 May 2017

We rated The Queen Anne Street Practice – Room 4 as good because:

  • The service had effective systems to identify and manage risks to patient safety. The consultant psychiatrist worked closely with other agencies to assess and manage risks and understood safeguarding protocols and procedures.
  • The service conducted comprehensive assessments of patient needs in a timely and efficient manner. Assessments included details of the patient’s mental health, social circumstances and family dynamics. Care records were individualised for each patient and had a focus on recovery.
  • Patients and families were complimentary about the manner the consultant informed them of treatment options and involved them in care planning.
  • The service worked in partnership with other experienced independent practitioners to collaborate, cross-refer patients and discuss clinical matters. There were governance systems in place that ensured the quality and efficacy of the service provided.

However:

  • The service did not have robust alarm arrangements for lone working.
