During an inspection looking at part of the service

We observed interaction between staff and patients. We spoke with staff that included; the provider, the practice manager, a health care assistant and two receptionists.

We saw that policies and procedures were in place to protect vulnerable adults and children. Staff employed by the practice had received guidance and training to ensure they had an understanding of what constituted abuse and how to make referrals if necessary.

We looked at the premises and facilities in relation to infection control. We saw that systems were in place that ensured infection control procedures were effective in minimising the risk and spread of infection.

We saw that the provider had ensured that regular health and safety checks of the premises had been carried out.

The records for the management of the practice were in place and there were systems to ensure regular assessment and monitoring of the quality of service that patients receive.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of patients who used the service. We reviewed records and systems and looked at the environment and how this impacted on the service delivery. We spoke with six patients who used the service, and observed interaction between staff and patients. We spoke with staff that included; the practice manager, the practice nurse, a district nurse, a health care assistant, a receptionist and the principle GP.

This told us the appointment system in the practice had worked well for patients. Patient's care needs had been assessed; they had time to discuss their health care issues, and had been fully involved in making decisions about their care and treatment.

Policies and procedures were in place to protect vulnerable adults and children. However, not all staff in the practice had received guidance to ensure they had an understanding of what constituted abuse.

We reviewed the facilities and practice for infection control. Patients told us the practice was always clean. However, systems were not found to be in place that ensured all infection control procedures met current requirements.

The provider had not ensured that regular health and safety checks of the premises had been carried out.

Equipment was safe to use and met the needs of patients.

Recruitment policies and procedures were in place to protect patients.

The records for the management of the practice were not all in place.
