During an inspection in response to concerns

Medyk Dental and Medical Centre is an independent healthcare provider offering restorative dentistry and GP services in Ealing. The provider has two locations in Ealing both of which offer services by a staff team who speak English and Polish. The clinicians at Medyk Dental and Medical Centre work at both locations. During the inspection we spoke with the practice manager, an administrator, and a dental nurse.

We observed that the centre was clean and hygienic. We spoke with staff about the process for the decontamination of dental instruments and looked at infection control records. There were systems in place to ensure the centre was clean and dental equipment was decontaminated and sterilized ready for use.

There were systems in place for the safe recruitment of staff. We reviewed the files of five members of staff who worked at the practice in a clinical capacity, for example GPs and psychologists. All staff had a Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) and were registered with their professional body. All of the required recruitment documentation was in place apart from one reference for a member of staff.

During a routine inspection

People who spoke with us commented very positively on all aspects of the service, in particular the information provided by staff to support people in making decisions about their individual treatment plan. One person told us "I was given lots of information and told the options and the costs." Another person said, "I was asked how I wanted to proceed with the ongoing treatment and the options were discussed with me."

There were processes in place to monitor infection control practices and arrangements for decontaminating surgical equipment in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Department of Health.

People said they felt confident in the skills and experience of staff. We were told by one person, "I have full confidence in my dentist." Another said "I would recommend this service." We observed positive interactions between staff and people who used the service.

We spoke to four members of staff and asked if they had received supervision and an appraisal. They told us that they had the opportunity to receive training and had appraisal and we saw records which confirmed this.

The organisation used a range of methods to monitor the quality of its services, including collecting the views of people who used it.
