During a routine inspection

Farnham Road Dental Surgery provide a range of NHS and private dental services to adults and children. The practice is open on Monday to Friday and offers appointments between the hours of 9am to 5pm. The practice team consists of principal dentist and a dental nurse.

The practice occupies a residential property and treatment is provided from the ground floor. There is a small reception, waiting area and patient toilets.

This focussed inspection was planned to check whether the practice was meeting the legal requirements and regulations associated with the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

Our key findings were:

  • The practice  infection control systems did not reflect national guidance.
  • The practice did not have systems in place to protect patients from unsafe or unsuitable equipment.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we visited Farnham Road Dental Surgery on 17 April 2013 and 9 May 2013, we found they were not compliant with three of the outcomes we reviewed. This was because; appropriate standards of safety or hygiene had not always been maintained, full recruitment checks had not been carried out on staff and the provider had not regularly assessed and monitored the quality of their service.

We set compliance actions and required the provider to tell us how and when they would become compliant.

The provider sent us an action plan in June 2013 and we carried out a further visit to the service on the 18 September 2013 to see if this had been implemented and the necessary improvements made.

We found the areas of non-compliance had been addressed satisfactorily. This was because storage and disposal of waste amalgam had been improved, waste containers in surgeries could now be foot operated, instruments were now stored in lidded containers, additional checks on staff had been undertaken and documented and improved provision was in place to obtain feedback on the service from people who used it..

17 April and 9 May 2013

During a routine inspection

People told us they were very pleased with the standard of dental service they received. They said all the staff were very friendly and helpful. People told us they were informed about treatment options at each consultation. The costs of treatment were clearly set out for people. This meant people could decide what treatment they would have and what the cost would be. We looked at patient records. There was basic information provided for each patient. Details of treatment provided was recorded at each visit. People completed a medical history questionnaire which was subsequently updated. There were systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection, however these were not as effective as they could be.

We confirmed all dentists employed in the practice were registered with the General Dental Council. We confirmed all dental nurses employed in the practice were registered with the General Dental Council. This meant their qualifications and skills had been maintained appropriately and were up to date.

People we spoke with about their dental care experience told us they would speak to the administrative or dental staff if they had any problems or concerns. There were no feedback or comment forms available in the practice for people to complete if they wanted to. We were told contact was not made with registered patients to obtain their views about the practice and their dental care between consultations.
